Summary
You may have heard about open source. In simple terms, it's software, code, libraries, frameworks available for free to anyone who wants to use them.
But do you know that you can make money creating free software like that?? It sounds strange, doesn't it? "free" and "making money" in the same sentence?
Yes it is! That's why I'm speaking with Caleb Porzio in this episode. Caleb is a PHP and Laravel open source developer. He is making a full time income from his open source projects. Just to be precise, by full time income I mean over $100K a year and it's growing.
The strategy that Caleb is using is very unusual and I haven't heard about this approach at all before I came across his story.
Caleb is using GitHub Sponsor feature, which allows anyone to support a developer on GitHub with a monthly contribution which can range from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars a month.
As of this recording on September 2020 Caleb has almost 700 GitHub sponsors. That is how he is making over $100K a year.
During our conversation we went through exactly how he is doing this. My hope is that out of the many lessons from his story, you will be able to apply some of them to your own journey.
I also want to give a shout-out to Julio Ordonez for suggesting Caleb to me.
